Assistant (COTA) Overview: The Certified Occupational Therapist
Assistant (COTA) delivers rehabilitative occupational therapy
services to patients under the guidance of a licensed Occupational
Therapist. This position necessitates NBCOT certification, state
licensure, familiarity with therapy software, and teamwork with
interdisciplinary groups while complying with healthcare
regulations and facility protocols. Key duties include executing
treatment plans, documenting patient progress, and upholding
professional and ethical standards in post-acute care environments.
Position Overview The COTA role involves providing direct
rehabilitative care in occupational therapy to patients referred by
physicians, under the supervision of a licensed Occupational
Therapist (OT), in alignment with all relevant laws, regulations,
and organizational standards. Education, Experience, and Licensure
Requirements NBCOT certification required upon hiring; renewal is
optional thereafter. Graduation from an accredited occupational
therapy program (ASOT). Current registration/licensure in the
relevant state, with an obligation to maintain an active license in
good standing throughout employment. Preferred one (1) year of
experience in post-acute care or a similar setting. CPR
certification required upon hiring or to be obtained during
orientation; must remain current throughout employment. Specific
Job Responsibilities Engage in community health
initiatives/projects as appropriate. Proficient in Microsoft Word,
Excel, and email communication. Collaborate with patients,
families, and support departments to effectively address patient
needs. Consistently demonstrate proper body mechanics. Make
independent decisions when necessary. Possess knowledge of
practices, procedures, and regulations governing operations in the
post-acute care facility. Implement and interpret departmental
programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. Exhibit
proficiency in all competency areas, including patient rights,
safety, and sanitation. Maintain professional relationships with
colleagues, vendors, and others. Ensure confidentiality of all
proprietary and sensitive information. Understand and adhere to
organizational policies, including those related to harassment and
compliance. Demonstrate integrity and professionalism by following
the organization’s Code of Conduct and completing required
compliance training. Essential Functions Implement occupational
treatment plans for patients as directed by the supervising OT.
Document patient information accurately and promptly. Utilize
therapy software effectively and correctly. Provide excellent
customer service and maintain a positive demeanor towards patients.
Assist in the safe evacuation of patients when necessary. Exhibit
reliable and consistent attendance. Employ reasoning skills and
sound judgment in various situations. Communicate effectively and
work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team. Engage in
physical activities such as sitting, standing, bending, lifting,
pushing, pulling, stooping, walking, reaching, and moving
intermittently during work hours. Read, write, speak, and
